Better Belays workshop

Do you ever find yourself at the top of a lead route feeling slightly daunted by how to go about building yourself a belay to bring up your partner? Our one day Better Belays workshop aims to arm you with a comprehensive tool kit of skills and knowledge to be able to efficiently and safely build robust anchor belays in a variety of methods. We'll cover everything from the quality of placements used, how to deal with in and out of reach anchors, to a systematic method of how to check you always have a safe and robust belay set up.

All of our courses are run by highly qualified and experienced Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors (formerly MIA) who are members of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors, so you know you are in good hands when it comes to knowledge, safety and tailored, progressive teaching to help you get the most from your course.

Course Content:

  • Quantifying gear placements 

  • Approaching in and out of reach anchors

  • A variety of safe methods of rope work systems

  • The IDEAS methodology

  • Use of slings in equalisation of anchors

  • All safety equipment can be provided

Course requirements:

Outline of the day:

We will meet at the crag venue car park (car sharing options may be available), and after an initial meet and greet we will head out to the crag for the day. Your instructor will gradually introduce new skills and build on these as the day progresses. The day will end at 4pm with time to feedback and discuss the next steps for your climbing progression.

Kit to bring:

  • All climbing safety equipment can be provided

  • Harness and helmet (these can be borrowed)

  • Climbing shoes and chalk bag

  • Plenty of warm clothing

  • Waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers

  • Suncream, sunhat and sunglasses

  • Plenty of food, snacks and water

  • Please feel free to bring any climbing gear you have as your instructor will encourage you to learn with the equipment you will be using in the future
